Why I don't like UpWork, Freelancer.com, and Fiverr

Freelance economy is on the trend right now, many people join force to becoming freelancers, and one of the hottest question on Quora is "What is the best freelance platform to work with?"

When you search "freelance works" or related words, these sites always show up first: Fiverr, UpWork and Freelancer.com along with other emerging platforms.  I have tried them all, and I dislike them all.

Here are the reasons why I don't like to work on Fiverr, UpWork, and Freelancer.com:

1. Fiverr, UpWork and Freelancer.com are freelancer pimps.

It sounds hard, but how do pimps work? They bring you a "service provider", and guard the whole working process to make sure customer pays, and the "service provider" will not run away or take all the money all for herself.  Sounds familiar?  This is how the freelance platforms work.

I once use Fiverr to hire a freelancer to help me proof-read an English news release.  At the end of the text is an email for media contact.  But then I immediately received a warning in the message that exchange emails is forbidden.  So I realized that all the private conversations are monitored on Fiverr, and it probably applies to UpWork and Freelancer.com as well.  That is scary.  I don't know how people can swallow it in the 21st century.

2.  Delayed payment.

The worst of all is Fiverr, it takes them 2 weeks to release you the payment.  The reason?  Well, 2 weeks time is long enough to get interest from short term bonds or deposit, so I think Fiverr probably take freelancers' money to earn extra interest.  If you don't believe, check the market yourself.  Look for short term bonds and see the closure time.

3. What happened if one day they decide to close your account?

It can be for no reason or wrong reason, but just think about it can give me chills.  You can read some real stories on these situations - account got disabled or deleted by Fiverr for no reason.
